Two different things called elastics

Ligature ties are the small rings that hold the wire into each bracket. These are the colored ones. They are changed at every adjustment appointment, so the color is a fresh choice usually every one to two months.

Rubber bands are the larger elastics that hook between the upper and lower teeth to correct the bite. These are worn by the patient, changed daily, and are not decorative. Wearing them as instructed has a direct effect on how long treatment takes.

Choosing colors

Ties come in a wide range of colors. Some patients pick school colors, holiday combinations, or a different color each visit. Some prefer grey or clear, which are the least visible options on metal brackets.

A few practical notes. Clear ties pick up stain from coffee, tea, and strongly colored foods over the weeks between visits. White ties can make teeth look more yellow by comparison. Darker colors make teeth look lighter.

How rubber bands work

Rubber bands apply force between the upper and lower arches to correct how the jaws meet. Braces align the teeth within each arch. Rubber bands change the relationship between the two.

They need to be worn for the number of hours the orthodontist specifies, usually full-time apart from eating and brushing. Wearing them inconsistently is the most common reason treatment runs longer than estimated.

Change them as instructed, usually at least once a day. They lose elasticity quickly.
