Invisalign® vs. braces
A direct comparison of clear aligners and fixed braces on appearance, treatment time, cost, comfort, and what each handles best. CDZ Ortho, Johns Creek.

The comparison
Appearance. Aligners are close to invisible at conversational distance. Clear braces are noticeable but not obvious. Metal braces are visible.
Removability. Aligners come out to eat and to brush. Braces are fixed to the teeth for the whole course of treatment.
Daily responsibility. Aligners depend on wear time, 20 to 22 hours a day. Braces do not depend on the patient remembering to put anything in or take anything out.
Treatment time. Comparable for most cases. Aligners can be faster for mild to moderate cases and slower for complex movements.
Comfort. Both cause soreness for a few days after a new tray or a wire adjustment. Aligners have no metal to irritate the cheeks. Braces have no plastic edges to get used to.
Diet. No restrictions with aligners, since they come out. Braces rule out hard and sticky food for the duration of treatment.
Cleaning. Aligners come out, so brushing and flossing are unchanged. Braces require more deliberate cleaning around brackets and wires.
Cost. Similar for most cases. The specific fee depends on the case, not on which system is chosen.
What each handles best
Braces are the more predictable choice for large vertical movements, rotating round teeth such as premolars, and cases needing significant skeletal correction.
Aligners handle most crowding, spacing, and bite problems well, provided the patient wears them as directed.
How the decision gets made
Dr. Cen reviews the case at the consult and tells you which options are appropriate. Where both would work, the choice comes down to preference: appearance, removability, and how confident you are about wear time.
